Requiem for a Dream

 Where movies like Jennifer's Body are marketed as horror movies but really aren't, this one is the complete opposite....it's straight up grade A horror that I never want to watch again

Not a bad start up for the decade! A pretty respectable top 5, Final Destination was the start of one of the hugest franchises of the decade, Unbreakable continued the streak of Shamaylan's success, Ginger Snaps has to be one of the best werewolf movies ever, and The Gift is such an underrated joy. But in the end, for sheep depravity and a balls to the walls performance by Christian Bale, I couldn't help but run with American Psycho.

This was such a great year, maybe I'm biased as Fuck and a lot of it was trash but this was the year my parents started letting me see a lot of these movies so screw it. Frailty was a no-brainer for me though, the twist alone gets me every time.

Lake Mungo, on the contrary to Trick R' Treat, took a genre that I am NOT a huge fan of (the found footage/documentary genre) and really made it feel authentic and chilling all at once, and I'm not just talking about THAT scene

A pretty fair way to end the decade! A lot of remakes this year, most of which were hits others were....choices. Drag Me To Hell felt like a rollercoaster from beginning to end, inventive, fun, and proof that you can be a boss with a PG-13 rating.

There's writing and characterization so sharp it drew blood. And I could watch a miniseries of Parker Posey as Meg Swan all day long.

Scream 3

This is easily one of my favorite Horror franchises in History, but sadly this is the entry that feels like dead weight (pun intended). There's still charm & clever writing but sadly the whole thing just feels like "more is more". More new characters (only Parker Posey & Deon Richmond stand out), longer length (a bit of trimming would have helped) and a longer explanation/exposition from the killer (this was just a mess). Of the series it's the turkey, not in the typically used way of being a complete bomb, but in more of a sense of something that's enjoyed while being initially consumed but makes you feel bloated after.

Hollow Man

The idea of what we would allow ourselves to do if no one could see us is an interesting premise in itself. How much impact would morals have on us? Would we go by the motto "If you can't see it, then it didn't happen"? This is the basic concept of Hollow Man, a disturbing and fascinating thriller.

Dr. Sebastian Caine (played with awesome menace by Kevin Bacon) is turned invisible by his fellow scientists as an experiment which could possibly benefit the military in a large way. Of course shit goes wrong, and he ends up being stuck as an invisible man. At first, he seems quite harmless performing jokes as serious as going "Boo" at someone in the dark. As time goes on and Sebastian begins to feel the power, everyone including his fellow scientists, invisible dogs, and naked neighbors become vulnerable to danger at his hands.

The special effects in Hollow Man are easily the best things about the movie. The transformation scenes with Sebastian are ridiculously authentic and powerful. This really looks like a surgery that could be done in any hospital today. So yeah, scenes with Sebastian doing things as simple as throwing water on himself just look so amazing and fucking cool.

My biggest problem with Hollow Man unfortunately, is the length. There are definitely some legit thrills in this movie, but overall I feel like some of them went on for too long. The last act of the movie feels like it goes on for about 15 minutes too long, where nothing happens except Sebastian picking off his fellow teammates because of the fear of getting turned in. We know that once one of them is alone, they will become Sebastian's next victim. So when it happens...the scenes become a bit stale as a result of how expected they are.

Despite an unneeded length, Hollow Man is a very interesting thriller with an awesome idea and stellar special effects. Definitely recommended for those who circle jerk over worthy CGI effects.
