2018 in review

Hereditary

This one showed a lot of promise from the initial previews and luckily it didn't disappoint. It really deserves to be seen in theaters as an experience, this type of slow burn deserves a big screen viewing. It's not nearly as in your face Bullshit like as some would hope but it's actually quite unsettling especially when reflecting on it all at the end. Toni Collette stars as a woman who has just lost her Mother, and as result, loses her Shit as well as she is in the complicated process of grieving yet also worrying what internal (and possibly external) demons are out to play now that the matriarch of the bunch is gone. Suffice it to say, Shit hits the fan and the family will never be the same again. I think of The Babadook as Hereditary deals with similar themes of loss and depression often forming as the scariest monsters of all, but fear not, there are other monsters waiting to rear their heads as well. I also think of Babadook when I think of the movie really succeeding or failing based on the success of the lead actress. And Toni Collette isn't fucking around here, she's a one woman haunted house for the entire movie. This is the rare type of movie that gives me the feelings that I wish more horror movies did; the second thought of wondering if all the doors are locked before I go to sleep.

Incredibles II

Let's be real on two things; first of all, no one expected this one to surpass the original, right? And furthermore, no one gave as fuck as we've all been waiting for this movie for 14 years, right? Exactly. The whole movie is like a cinematic family reunion with a family that no true Disney fan can forget. It's definitely not beating the original at all. The movie is split into two movies; a majority of which is focusing on Ms. Incredible and her battles with new villains over the story of Mr. Incredible and his family battles at home to just keep the family's Shit together. The latter of which ringing more true to the tone of the first movie. The heart has definitely made a bit of room for the pulse as no CGI explosion goes unused, but all the wit and the humor is still in the body as well so who am I to roast?

The First Purge

Good lord. If Hereditary makes me wonder about the doors being locked, The First Purge makes all those cares float away as no thief or villain can rob me the way this movie did of 90 minutes. It's all the same Shit as the others, only difference here is that this one is claimed to be as the first by having the main setting be in a smaller area; a lower income, mainly minority area that the Government seems to give no Fucks about. Detect the shade? Detect the truth? If you don't, fear not as this movie is about as subtle as the hammer you wish was slamming into your heads to distract from the inane script and spoof worthy performances. Keep on taking the slight promise we had in the beginning and slamming it down like this, I guarantee the next purge will be taking place in the theaters that show these movies.

Cover Me

The cover of a book can be very appealing,

but inside the book is much more revealing.

To finish a chapter may feel like a mile,

a small goal that may warrant a smile.

But look on the other side; the writer,

to write just a section as a struggle fighter.

How do you tell the people that stare?

Wondering why mentally, they won't meet you there?

Or the ones you fear won't care.

Hell, worse, or the worst, the ones of all,

the ones of all that made you fall.

All of these people, all of these fears,

opening yourself to avoid numerous tears.

To share just a cover is far from tough,

but to explain the book can be rough.

But, I must do it, to make my inside pretty,

share all my bullshit quite witty and gritty.

Friend Request

Ugh. What did we do in a past life to receive such a constant shipping of stale, uninspired horror movies? Like a good amount of media in recent times, Friend Request markets itself as movie dipped in the horrors of social media. But unfortunately, the execution here feels so half-assed and distant it's as if we're reporting on a pool of a story by sticking our toes in. Or even walking by a deadly animal in the zoo and hoping it explains why it's so deadly. The recent film "Unfriended" also had themes of evils on social media coming to bite us in the spirit form, but at least that movie gave us something to chew on in terms of the way we can treat people when we are in front of a screen and how those actions can bite back, or in this case kill back. The most fucking frightening thing that happens here in the social media scenes is being unable to delete the "antagonist" after she commits suicide due to the way the "protagonist" and her friends treat her and begins to stalk them. And I use quotes around the words protagonist and antagonist for good reason; who the fuck are we supposed to be rooting for, or even against in this movie? Are we on the side of the bland villain, contradicting olden horror movie days when we were supposed to be against the big baddie? Are we on the side of the even blander protagonist and all of her friends? Who all happen to look about 15 years too old to register as young college students. That's the issue here, there's really no perspective or insight here into the horrors of which side we are on, which makes the even more stock loud noises, bangs, and poorly visualized evil faces as the antagonist comes after the protagonist and company more of a nuisance then anything. You know what's an even more daunting part of social media than friend requests? This movie's process of searching and searching for a point to it all and having your search engine say "Sorry not found".

Lady Bird

My favorite movies are the ones that you learn something from especially if that something pertains to your own life. Lady Bird hits that nail on the head without ever coming off as disingenuous or contrived. One of my favorite scenes is one in which a supporting character states her theory that love and attention are the same which echoes throughout the tone of the film. The relationship between the title character and her mother is so genuine I imagine it difficult for anyone not to feel reminiscent of how they interacted with their parents in youth. This isn't a movie all about the grand moments of life, but the smaller ones that build up to something much more plentiful as we veer into adulthood. The performances from Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf are stellar, the film really lives or dies on their dynamic relationship of unconditional love even when it's next to impossible to include "unconditional like" in it as well. If the movie's overall message of love and attention being synonymous rings true, then Lady Bird is more than deserving of any viewer's unconditional attention.

Wish Upon

You'll never see any of the twists coming; said if those who have never seen a movie before. Nothing here feels remotely fresh and I felt like the creators let the PG-13 rating stifle its' own creativity. My wish; that Wish Upon grew a pair and escaped a formulaic screenplay.
